Does talking about suicide increase suicidal ideation?
No, talking or asking someone about suicide does not increase or create suicidal ideation. In fact, research has shown that talking about suicide may reduce the risk by allowing people to share their experiences (Dazzi et al., 2014; Wasserman et al., 2020).
When we refuse to talk about suicide, it sends the message to those who are struggling that it is not okay to ask for help or talk about what they are experiencing. Hope Squad empowers members to talk about suicide and connect those in crisis to help.
